Many of the great saints of Islam were also prolific writers and although Sufi practices sometimes caused controversy among the more legalistic minded, many of the Sufis were equally well versed in the other Islamic sciences and based their lives and work solidly on the Qur’an. For a Sufi it is the essence that has more weight than form and for them all things are the manifestation of the attributes of Allah. The signs of God are therefore everywhere bearing the message of Oneness and the return to the One.
